March 10, 2010 at 2:51 pm

Via: Sheepshead Bites
On Monday we gave you the schedules for lane closures along three local sections of the Belt Parkway undergoing construction. At the time, pothole repairs were just announced and it was suggested that closures related to the Seven Bridges Project would be suspended. That information was incorrect and we have updated the original [...]

A Honeycomb Wasp Nest

March 10, 2010 at 2:28 pm

Via: BeehiveHairdresser.com
We noticed a decomposing wasp nest perched high up in a stinky ginkgo tree on a busy Brooklyn corner.

They’ve moved on to nest elsewhere this year and we can only hope that this nest safely falls in front of someone so that they are scared clueless.

CAKE Rises from MarketPlace Gallery’s Ashes in Albany

March 10, 2010 at 12:44 pm

Via: Brooklyn Street Art
This past weekend a new show at MarketPlace Gallery opened – which is remarkable in itself since an electrical fire badly damaged it last summer.
New York Street Artist CAKE, Brooklyn illustrator Travis W. Simon, and Albany’s RADICAL! took over the expansive space, run by brothers Samson, Alex and Max Contompasis.
The [...]

Sheepshead Bay’s Beauty Queen: Keelie Sheridan

March 10, 2010 at 12:00 pm

Via: Sheepshead Bites
Last week, we told you about Miss Brooklyn (and Manhattan Beach resident), Keelie Sheridan, shopping at the Nostrand Avenue Salvation Army store. That was after the “Living Big on Small Change” blog, Brokelyn, interviewed the contestant winner about her economical ways.
This week, just a short while before she crowns this year’s winner, Keelie [...]

How will Atlantic Yards Affect Crown Heights?

March 10, 2010 at 11:03 am

Via: Nostrand Park
Now that it seems that Atlantic Yards is pretty much a done deal, we were curious what folks think might be the spillover effects, if any, on Crown Heights. Interestingly, during last year’s local city council elections, almost all of the candidates for Crown Heights’ 36th district - a district located at the bookend of Atlantic Yards [...]

Kingston Lounge

March 10, 2010 at 11:00 am

Via: Nostrand Park
In light of Shawn’s “Abandoned” post the other day, let’s reflect on another tragedy of abandonment (or since I’m a glass is half full type of gal — let’s just say this is a beacon of restoration potential) in the neighborhood.  Kingston Lounge.
Located on the corner of Bergen and Kingston, Kingston Lounge has existed [...]

Lundys Bros.: A Wistful Reminiscing

March 10, 2010 at 11:00 am

Via: Sheepshead Bites
A talented writer running a personal blog named More Glib Than Profound posted a  chronicling of his childhood memories of F.W.I.L. Lundy’s Bros. Restaurant. Living in Sheepshead Bay all my life, I’ve heard so many stories of the massive restaurant that, as legend has it, sold 15,000 meals on Mother’s Day. But Lundy’s [...]

Crown Heights Real Estate Roundup: February 2010

March 10, 2010 at 10:00 am

Via: Nostrand Park
When I reported that real estate activity in Crown Heights had gotten off to a slow start for 2010, I had my concerns. For the record, it’s not unusual under normal market conditions to begin the year with slow sales. The holiday season often causes home shoppers to suspend their search [...]

RIP Corey Haim

March 10, 2010 at 9:33 am

Via: BeehiveHairdresser.com
TMZ is reporting that Corey Haim, the HAIM, has been found dead this morning from an apparent drug overdose.
We loved watching him in ‘License to Drive’ and ‘Fast Getaway’ when we were growing up, so much so that we used to do a Corey Haim impression back in our stand-up days.  That said, the dude also [...]

Midweek Photo: Warm Weather Returns!

March 10, 2010 at 7:00 am

Via: Sheepshead Bites
I’m so happy for the return of beautiful weather. In Sheepshead Bay, that invariably means walks on any of the four local beaches, and watching a sunset to the west. It means strolls along the marina, or having a cold beer on a cafe with sidewalk seating. It means Littlenecks at Randazzos, feeding [...]

Brooklyn Parrots Enjoying Spring Weather

March 10, 2010 at 6:28 am

Via: BeehiveHairdresser.com
We swung by Leif Ericson Park at 8th Avenue to see how the Brooklyn Parrots are doing in this warm weather.  No surprise, they’re loving it!

We found them taking a break from chewing the twigs off of the trees for their new nest and taking in some sun.
Having never seen them in person up until [...]

Brennan & Carr Considering Expansion?

March 9, 2010 at 2:30 pm

Via: Sheepshead Bites
Brennan & Carr (3432 Nostrand Avenue) seem to really love their Facebook page, using it to connect with fans and pump up the rivalry with Roll-N-Roaster. Now, they’re musing on a second location. They asked, “If another B&C was to open up, where would an ideal location be?”
Here’s a screenshot of the status update:

Toons Throwback

March 9, 2010 at 2:28 pm

Via: BeehiveHairdresser.com
We recently spotted ‘Toons’ on the pulled down gate of a closed down bodega.  ‘Toons’ is a tag that we haven’t seen in years.

In the mid to late 90s ‘Toons’ was everywhere we looked and was usually accompanied by a friendly ‘Tops’ tag nearby.  We even rode a bus one day and watched Toons and Tops [...]

Crowd Swarms Ave U Clothing Store

March 9, 2010 at 12:35 pm

Via: Sheepshead Bites
A “50 percent off” sale of North Face products caused a mob scene yesterday at Downtown, a clothing retailer on Avenue U and Batchelder Street. We’re not really sure what the big deal was, but for most of yesterday afternoon and into the evening lines formed down the block. The store was only [...]

Street Layers from Paris, Berlin and Vienna

March 9, 2010 at 11:32 am

Via: Brooklyn Street Art
From the Editor:
In the past I breezed by destroyed posters and flyers that amass on construction worksites and abandoned buildings with little thought. Thanks to the work of photographer Vinny Cornelli I have learned to see them entirely differently – like Earth Science, like strata; a layer of text or design or [...]
